Oregon Grape Root
Oregon grape root is used in herbal medicine for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, primarily for skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema (topically) and for digestive issues such as diarrhea, indigestion, and liver support (internally), thanks to its active compound, berberine. It helps fight bacterial/fungal infections, stimulates bile production for digestion, and detoxifies the body, but there's limited research for many uses, and it's crucial to use safely, avoiding during pregnancy.
Usnea lichen
Usnea has been used in traditional Native American medicine to treat lungs, intestines, throat, sinuses, and the urinary and reproductive system. It is considered a sacred “herb of the North”. The Dakota call it Chan wiziye, translating to “on the north side of the tree” or “spirit of the north wind” (Buhner, 1996)
Cascara Bark
Cascara bark is primarily used as a
stimulant laxative to treat short-term constipation by inducing muscle contractions in the colon. Beyond medicinal use, its extracts serve as flavoring agents in beverages and baked goods, and its compounds are occasionally used in manufacturing products like sunscreens.
Yerba Santa
Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon) is a resinous, fragrant California native shrub known for its tough, sticky leaves, used by Indigenous peoples and herbalists for respiratory issues (coughs, colds, asthma), fevers, and inflammation, often as a tea or tincture, but scientific evidence is limited, and it's crucial to consult a doctor, especially with medications like lithium. Its name means "holy herb" in Spanish, reflecting its historical medicinal use for ailments like headaches, stomachaches, and even as a thirst quencher or food flavorer.
Devil's Club Root
Devil's club bark (from the root and inner stem of the Oplopanax horridus shrub) is a significant traditional medicine in the Pacific Northwest, used by Indigenous peoples for ailments like arthritis, colds, diabetes, and skin issues, often as tea or poultices, and is sometimes called "Alaskan ginseng" due to its relation to ginseng. The thorny plant's inner bark, roots, and sometimes berries are prepared in various ways (teas, oils, salves) to treat inflammation, boost immunity, and for spiritual purposes, though it may affect blood sugar and requires caution, especially with diabetes.
Uva ursi (bearberry)
Uva ursi (bearberry) is a traditional herbal remedy primarily used to address issues related to the
urinary tract, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder inflammation. Its leaves contain arbutin, which is converted to the antiseptic hydroquinone in the body, providing its medicinal properties.
Pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata)
Pipsissewa has been used by Native Americans and early European settlers for various health conditions due to its diuretic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It was even listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1820 to 1916.
Teasel root (from Dipsacus species)
Teasel root (from Dipsacus species) is a traditional herb used in Chinese and European herbalism for musculoskeletal pain, joint stiffness, and to support tendons & ligaments, potentially by drawing out bacteria and improving circulation. Modern uses include supporting the body in Lyme disease protocols (drawing bacteria for antibiotics to target), nerve pain, and as a detoxifier, often prepared as tinctures or teas, though scientific evidence for many uses is limited.
Stinging Nettle Urtica dioica.
Stinging nettle (
Urtica dioica) is a highly nutritious perennial plant that has been used in herbal medicine for centuries. Historically used by ancient Egyptians for arthritis and Roman soldiers to stay warm, it is now commonly found in supplements, teas, and topical creams.
